From Tasmania, Australia, Joanna has a degree in Marine and Antarctic Science from the Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies at the University of Tasmania. She has a first class honours degree in seaweed physiology, where she examined the ammonium uptake kinetics of Tasmanian macroalgae and their applications to Integrated multi-trophic aquaculture. Additionally, in 2019 Joanna was awarded the Australasian ROLEX scholarship of the Our World-Underwater Scholarship Society®, where she spent 12 months travelling the world visiting macroalgae research facilities, aquaculture operations and working with underwater photographers Joanna spends a large portion of her free time underwater, documenting the incredible diversity of marine life with her Images. Her photos have won several international awards including the overall winner of the 2020 United Nations World Oceans Day photo competition and the 2020 Ocean Geographic Emerging Photojournalist of the Year.
