The 24th International Seaweed Symposium was held for the first time in Australia.  It took place in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia’s most southern state, from Sunday 19th to Friday 24th February 2023.

With International travel restrictions to Australia lifted, we hope as many of you as possible will be able to join us for the 24th ISS in Australia’s southern most state, Tasmania. If you are not able to travel, online attendance and participation will be available.

We very much look forward to seeing you in Hobart in 2023.

Hobart is a vibrant city, located at the foothill of kunanyi/Mt Wellington and situated along the Derwent River. It offers a contrasting blend of heritage (being Australia’s second oldest capital), scenery and culture. With its captivating history, picturesque waterways, rugged mountains and gourmet experiences, the city has something for everyone.

Australia has a proud tradition of phycological research with a very diverse algal flora. Tasmania is a global hotspot for seaweed diversity with >750 named species with many endemic species. In Tasmania we have a flourishing bioactives industry and rapidly developing aquaculture industries, including Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture and Asparagopsis culture. We also have a strong tradition in research on seaweed ecology and physiology, focused on climate change and mitigation. Tasmania is also the gateway to the spectacular and diverse algal flora of mainland Australia. We are excited to welcome you to the 24th ISS.

The 24th ISS committee has chosen the theme ‘Seaweeds in a changing world’, to focus on ongoing changes in seaweed aquaculture practices, industrial processing, future products and markets, local and global environmental change, and scientific advances that will change our understanding of how seaweeds function at all levels of organisation.

The symposium format will enable actual and virtual delegates and presenters to attend and interact, and we expect a vibrant and exciting new style of conference.  The organising committee feels the opportunity to have the Symposium also hosted online presents an opportunity for us to reach a broader audience than the traditional Symposium. As such, we see 2023 as being a new and positive direction for the Symposium.
